Telenovelas and it's effects on the Ghanaian pupil

Image
Sometimes I feel very sad when I see my pupils roaming about in town as if they had nothing to do in future. They seem so helpless that one can think of them as being "aimless" but on a second thought, they are not to blame since they can't do anything about their current fate.  Final year pupils are the ones I am worried for the most. Why do I say that? Most of these pupils come from less privileged homes where access to online teaching platforms is a big challenge. Those who have access to such platforms too make little or no use of them but rather pay attention to "unnecessary " contents on television, which at the long run do not have any positive impact on their education.  You will see two or three pupils gathered somewhere as if the are discussing educational issues. Go near them and you would be surprised to hear them discuss what happened in the last episode of a telenovela they watched the previous night. Those that didn't get the opportunity to wa

HOW TO REINTRODUCE STUDENTS TO THE NEW SCHOOL ROUTINES.

With schools set to reopen for final year students in Ghana to complete their course of studies and COVID-19 cases still on the rise in the country, teachers and school leaders will face a difficult task getting students back on track.   Some students may have lost relatives to the disease caused by the coronavirus, and some schools may have lost staff members due to COVID-19 or other reasons. These can traumatize the students when they get to know of it, adding to the fact that most of the students are likely to have lost academic ground while schools we're closed. So what can the teachers and school leaders do to help get the students to embrace the new routines when schools reopen? There are no easy answers to this question. However, teachers and school leaders can try out these ideas to help the students respond positively to the new school routines brought about by the COVID-19. 1. Integrate coronavirus into the curriculum. Teachers can help

WHY MUST I GET EDUCATED?

THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATION IN MODERN WORLD. The world is developing very fast as a result of the numerous technological advancements being undertaken by people of high intellectual abilities. How are these intellectuals controlling the growth of the world? Their key is EDUCATION. EDUCATION, according to Dictionary.com is "the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgement, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life". To ensure that nobody is left behind, we all need to adapt to these changing scenes of life, which is getting educated. The following are a few reasons why education has become very important in modern times. 1. Increase in income. Every institution is looking for the best brains to hire to help grow their business. These best brains are the educated citizens and not the illiterates. Getting hired because of your expertise means getting more inc

PREPARING STUDENTS FOR SCHOOL IN THE COVID-19 ERA.

PREPARING PUPILS FOR THE "NEW NORMAL" IN RURAL GHANA. It is worth noting that the COVID-19 Pandemic has brought with it several effects on almost everyone in the world, including students of all ages. With all schools in the country been closed down as a means of minimizing the spread of the pandemic, students have been at home for quite a long time now solely relying on online teaching avenues for learning, that is if they get access to any at all depending on where one is located.  Some teachers also organize teaching sessions with pupils using WhatsApp chats, Zoom, Telegram, and other means through which they can get their students some knowledge so that their time out of school becomes useful. These online classes which are helping in a way are however not benefiting the whole students in the country since it's not every student that gets access to these online opportunities, especially those in the rural communities. This means that students in the

The school buildings and other facilities are also affected by covid-19

I visited my place of work, Adeiso Methodist Junior High School last Tuesday to see how the environment looks like since school was closed and in fact I was very unhappy. I was unhappy not because I didn't find the pupils there but because the whole place  have been taken over by squatters and "weed smokers" who have not only littered the place but have also eased themselves all over the place even though there is a toilet facility which they themselves have destroyed the locks.  Some of the classroom blocks have being broken and the classrooms look like it's been abandoned for decades. Full of plastic bags and take-away packs, making the place look like an abandoned uncompleted building. I would like to use this opportunity to entreat the various Education Directorates to as a matter of urgency have talks with the various stakeholders in Education so as to have the public educated on the need to protect their schools now that we fight the Coronavirus pandemic s
